Japanese Idol Groups | A Guide to Popular Groups and Live Concert Culture

AKB48 was created in 2005 in Akihabara, Tokyo, and is produced by Yasushi Akimoto. Built around the concept of “idols you can go and meet,” the group holds regular performances at its own AKB48 Theater. Fan-participation projects such as the former “AKB48 Senbatsu General Election” also drew widespread attention. The group has sister groups both in Japan and overseas.

Nogizaka46 was formed in 2011 as the official rival to AKB48 and is part of the Sakamichi Series. The group is known for its elegant, refined costumes and songs. In addition to their musical activities, members also work as actors and models. The group’s concerts at large venues feature elaborate video and lighting production.

Sakurazaka46 was formed in 2015 as Keyakizaka46 and made its CD debut in 2016, before changing to its current name in 2020. The group is known for powerful, precise choreography and for stage performances that express the themes of its songs. In 2019, while still active as Keyakizaka46, the group performed at Tokyo Dome.

Hinatazaka46 was launched in 2015 as Hiragana Keyakizaka46. The group changed its name to Hinatazaka46 in 2019 and released its debut single that same year. It is known for upbeat songs, approachable banter, and bright, smile-filled stage performances. Members also appear on variety programs.

Morning Musume。 was formed in 1997 and is produced by Tsunku♂. Since 2014, the last two digits of the current year have been added to the group’s name, and in 2026 it is performing as “Morning Musume。’26.” A defining feature of the group is its ongoing cycle of new members joining and others graduating, with newer members carrying on songs from the past. “LOVE Machine,” released in 1999, became a million-seller.

Momoiro Clover Z was formed in 2008 as Momoiro Clover and adopted its current name in 2011. Performing under the concept of “Weekend Heroines,” the members entertain audiences with high-energy live shows and staging built around each member’s signature color. In 2014, they became the first female group to hold a solo concert at the National Stadium.

BABYMETAL is a three-member group formed in 2010. The current lineup consists of SU-METAL, MOAMETAL, and MOMOMETAL. Their music combines heavy metal instrumentation with pop vocals and choreography. They have also performed at rock festivals and concerts overseas.

FRUITS ZIPPER is a seven-member group that debuted in 2022. Under the slogan “From Harajuku to the World,” the group promotes a concept it calls “NEW KAWAII.” Its song “Watashi no Ichiban Kawaii Tokoro” (The Cutest Part of Me) became widely known largely through TikTok. In 2023, the group won Best New Artist at the Japan Record Awards.

Snow Man is a nine-member group formed in 2012 that made its CD debut on January 22, 2020. The group belongs to STARTO ENTERTAINMENT. Its appeal lies in stage performances incorporating acrobatics and precisely synchronized choreography across all nine members. Each member is also active as an actor or television personality.

SixTONES is a six-member group formed in 2015 that made its CD debut on the same day as Snow Man. Its music spans a wide range of genres, including rock, hip-hop, and R&B. The group is known for vocals that showcase each member’s distinctive voice and for the harmonies created when all six sing together.

King & Prince made its CD debut in 2018 with “Cinderella Girl.” The group currently performs as a duo consisting of Ren Nagase and Kaito Takahashi. It is known for approachable pop songs and tightly synchronized choreography between the two members. Both also appear in films and television dramas.

JO1 emerged from the audition program “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN” and debuted in 2020. The members of this global boy group were chosen by viewer voting. Drawing on powerful choreography and vocals, the group also performs outside Japan.

INI is an eleven-member group that emerged from “PRODUCE 101 JAPAN SEASON 2.” The group made its CD debut in 2021 with the single “A.” It is known for choreography that uses its large lineup to shift rapidly between formations, and for songs that blend rap and vocals.

SMAP, Arashi, and TOKIO are three groups that cannot be left out of any discussion of male idol history in Japan. SMAP succeeded in both music and variety programming, broadening the scope of what male idols could do. Arashi held large-scale concerts and won support across a wide range of generations. TOKIO built their musical activities around performing as a band playing their own instruments.SMAP ended group activities in 2016, followed by TOKIO in 2025 and Arashi in 2026.

Dedicated venues such as the AKB48 Theater offer performances where the audience is seated close to the stage. The AKB48 Theater is a five-minute walk from JR Akihabara Station. Tickets are applied for through the official website, and seats for most performances are allocated by lottery. To attend, you must present an original photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, for identity verification.

Idol live shows are held at live music clubs (known in Japan as “live houses”), concert halls, arenas, and domes. Tickets are sold through fan club presales, official websites, and ticket agencies. Some performances use electronic tickets. Be sure to check whether applications are accepted from overseas and which payment methods are available.

Depending on the group and the performance, you can take part in fan traditions such as waving penlights in each member’s signature color, joining in calls timed to the music, and wearing official T-shirts and towels. Rules for cheering, as well as for photography and recording, vary by performance. Read the official guidelines, and hold your penlight at a height that does not block the view of those around you.
