Event Details
This special performance brings together artists who earned high acclaim for their work on the film Kokuho (National Treasure): Min Tanaka, a dancer internationally acclaimed for his ongoing exploration of the origins of dance through the body; his sole disciple, Rin Ishihara; Hirokazu Taniguchi, a nihon buyo (traditional Japanese dance) artist born in Takayama City and recipient of the Gifu Prefecture Arts and Culture Commendation; and Marihiko Hara, a musician active across a wide range of fields including film music.
Each of these artists brings a distinct physical philosophy and expressive world, and their works will unfold in dialogue with the space of the Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum (Kusakabe Mingeikan), a designated Important Cultural Property. By keeping stage design to a minimum and embracing the building's structure and materials — along with the layers of history and time embedded within them — as part of the expression itself, the performance offers a singular experience that no conventional theater can provide.

The film Kokuho (National Treasure) was released on June 6 last year, and over the past year it has received acclaim I can only describe as miraculous. Carried by the momentum of the precious experiences that Kokuho has brought me, I will hold a dance performance in Hida Takayama. Our stage is the Kusakabe Folk Crafts Museum, a residence celebrated as a pinnacle of machiya (traditional townhouse) architecture — a space where the subtle traces and lingering presence of generations of human life still drift in the air. This announcement may come a little early, but I sincerely hope you will make the journey to witness a performance laid bare — one that will exist only on that single day, never to be repeated.
Together with Hirokazu Taniguchi, Marihiko Hara, and Rin Ishihara, I look forward to welcoming you.
— Min Tanaka
