Wadaiko Group YAMATO is a Japanese taiko ensemble based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, often referred to as the birthplace of Japan. Calling themselves “YAMATO – The Taiko Drumming Group That Travels the World,” they have performed over 4,800 times in 55 countries since their formation in 1993.
YAMATO’s performance cannot simply be defined as “taiko drumming.” The members, who train their bodies to the utmost limits, unleash sound pressure that far exceeds imagination. Yet their art is not merely about powerful volume. Each piece conveys delicate musical colors, and their meticulously crafted, overwhelmingly original performances have been described as “music of the body,” earning high acclaim worldwide.
Their stage is sometimes fierce, sometimes poignant, sometimes soothing—and in the very next moment, playful and humorous. Drawn together by the resonating sound of taiko drums, people gather and intersect their lives, sensing one another’s inner passion and heartbeat energy. They create moments where we truly feel, “We are alive!”
